Daleya Yeasmin was born in Narail, Bangladesh, and raised in a culturally involved family environment, where she picked up a natural liking to singing from an early age, which eventually became a lifelong passion for music.

 

Her early music lessons started with her father, Md. yousuf Ali, who himself was a great enthusiastic of music. Later, under the tutelage of Fahmida Khatun of famed institution “CCHAYANOT”, and Nando Dulal Das (student of renowned Sadhan Sarkar of Khulna), Daleya continued her study of music. At the same time, she also took vocal and classical lessons under different Ustads.

 

Though Rabindra Sangeet is her chosen field of music, Daleya nevertheless performed Nazrul geeti and Adhunik song as well on many occasions and won numerous awards in various competitions, notable among them, the special prize in “Jatio Rabindra Sangeet sommelon” and runner-up in “Ancholik” song competition.

 

While she was still a college student in Narail, she was selected as a regular Rabindra Sangeet artist at Khulna radio station. She then attended Bangladesh Agricultural University and completed her graduation in Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (Honours) from there. At this time her academic and music career went side by side.

 

She then joined in DANIDA project in Bangladesh as a Woman Development Coordinator and worked for 2 years before moved in Toronto.

 

Daleya moved to Toronto in 1997 and completed her studies in Computer Programming and Analysis in 2001. While in Toronto, she became a member of “Aamra Cchayanot” cultural organisation and performed at numerous cultural shows, including Bangladesh Sommelon and Fobana Sommelon. She was also involved in teaching music while in Toronto. Because of her commitment to music, she has always managed to find time to be culturally involved even while juggling between a family life and a full time career, however difficult it is.

 

Presently she is working as a Programmer and Analyst at Health Canada in Ottawa and she is actively involved in the community’s cultural life. Since moving here in 2008, she had a dream of opening a music school someday with the intention of grooming the local youngsters with singing talents and teach them through music the rich cultural heritage and identity of our nation. With that goal in mind, she began mentoring a group of students in an informal setting which formed the nucleus of her school project, and it continued that way for a while.

 

Finally, she has decided to officially open the music school sometime this year and a date will soon be announced.
